At the end of WWII, Jason Rhodes, Stephanie Howorth, and three other veterans of the Pacific War were returning to the States when the PBY in which they were flying crashed near an uninhabited island in the Yasawas, at the northwest edge of the Fijis. This is the story of young first love cursed by ambition and pride, and the roles that chance and fate often play in people's lives.

Rhodes, convinced that he is the favorite of a lesser god, sets out to fulfill two driving ambitions: to win the hand of the beautiful Stephanie Howorth, the only child of a rich Southern tycoon, and to write the Great American Novel. When the first of these two goals is apparently accomplished rather quickly, he is truly convinced that a god or muse is in his corner. He is, of course, very wrong.
