Our bures and the entrance to Club Fiji

Our overseas site is Club Fiji, which is just outside Nadi (Nandy to you blokes from the States), on the island of Viti Levu in the Fijis. And we are looking for recruits. It's free, of course, but you will have to give a little blood and do the following:

Raise your right hand and say the following in a solemn voice:
I solemnly swear

  • I shall never take the name of Paul Theroux in vain.
  • I shall travel to Club Fiji as soon as possible.
  • I shall begin writing travel stories for a living.

Paul Theroux

Theroux has published more than thirty-five books (as of 2002).

Martha Gellhorn

One of the truly great travel writers of all time was Martha Gellhorn, who had three husbands (at one time or another), and one of them was Ernest Hemingway.

Here is Martha being interviewed in London shortly before her death on February 15, 1998. She was born in St. Louis in 1908. Although she visited and wrote about nine wars, Martha preferred to write fiction. She was married to Ernest Hemingway from 1940 to 1945. In the early part of 1941 the two of them went to China (Martha was on assignment for the Atlantic Monthly), and from this came the title of a book (Travels with Myself and Another) and a brilliant story about that trip. (It is far better to read about China than to actually go there, according to this story.)

Martha as a young reporter for The Atlantic Monthly.

Here is Martha in front of her dressing mirror, writing in her notebook, with a picture of Heminway sipping from a cocktail glass. She was the only one of his four wives who walked out on him (instead of the other way around).
